An Evening with Henrik Stubbe Teglbjaerg, co-founder of the Phoenixville Firebird Festival
I was born in Denmark and grew up in the cities, but I chose to go into farming because I wanted to connect with the Earth. In Denmark and Switzerland, I worked on biodynamic farms based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. This way of farming looks at the land as a single living organism, which is part of a much bigger whole.
My plan was to buy my own dairy farm in Denmark and be there 365 days a year. But then I got an offer to visit America. I decided I should travel just one more time before settling down. Even though I had negative feelings about American politics on the world stage, I knew there were many exciting things worth exploring here.
What was supposed to be a short journey became a completely different life. I traveled around the United States for a year. I spent a month living in the woods with the Rainbow Family. I traveled to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, where I spent time with the Lakota people, attended sacred ceremonies, took part in the Sun Dance, and helped build a house. I later organized Rosebud workshops in Denmark and the Black Hills. I even spent several weeks living on the streets of San Francisco to explore what it means to live without a home, and for a time, I was the caretaker of a spiritual retreat center.
During these travels, I met Pamela, who later became my wife. Instead of returning to Denmark for that dairy farm, I put down my roots right here in Pennsylvania. In 1989, I began working as a cheesemaker at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, an intentional community influenced by (once again) Steiner’s biodynamic agriculture. I refurbished their "cheesery" and trained a wonderful apprentice from the Dominican Republic to take it over. From there, my daily work turned toward gardening and caring for the land as a groundskeeper for two significant local properties.
Eventually, Pamela and I parted on good terms, and I moved to Phoenixville. I quickly became involved in our local arts scene through the Arts and Entertainment Committee. We looked for unique ways to bring people together through public art, helping to bring murals to life like the Dance mural behind the Colonial Theatre and the Kites mural on Bridge Street. Then, in 2004, we created the Phoenixville Firebird Festival to celebrate our community’s spirit.
The question of how we live together has followed me all the way from Denmark.
When I first settled into ordinary American life, I watched the daily routine: work nine to five, come home, eat dinner, watch a movie, go to bed, and repeat. There is nothing wrong with these things, but I kept wondering: Why are we here? What happens when our habits separate us from each other and from nature?
My years of farming, traveling, and community projects have taught me that we need opportunities to break through the isolation of habitual life. We need real reasons to work, create, and celebrate together. That is what I hope to talk about: how shared community can interrupt the routines that isolate us, and remind us that we belong to something larger than ourselves.

33 Years and Still Going Strong – The Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza Returns to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center September 17 – 20, 2026Oaks, PA – Mancuso Show Management is proud to present the 33rd annual Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza. The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center will host this spectacular event September 17 - September 20, 2026 featuring over 1000 works of textile art. Additionally, the festival offers vendors, hands on workshops, lectures, a fashion show and product demos. Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza is the center of it all for quilt, wearable and textile art! A highlight of this year’s event is a special exhibition by 7-time Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein. Best known for writing La Cage aux Folles and Kinky Boots and starring as Edna in Hairspray, Harvey has been making quilts for more than 30 years. During the COVID lockdown, his passion for quilting flourished, inspiring a remarkable collection of quilt art that the Extravaganza is thrilled to premiere. Phoenixville Public Library will host a free four-part lecture series, “September of 1777: When the Revolutionary War Came to Southeastern Pennsylvania” over four Thursdays, September 17 through October 8, 6:00 – 7:30 PM each night. Michael Snyder will be the presenter. Beginning in September 1777, southeastern Pennsylvania became the focus of the Revolutionary War as British General Sir William Howe brought an 18,000-man army into our area in an attempt to capture Philadelphia, the center of America’s government and the largest city in the colonies. Over the next nine months the area in which we live was the scene of some stirring events: the battle of Brandywine, the Battle of the Clouds, the Paoli Massacre, and the Battle of Germantown. In addition, the local civilian population had to deal with the problems created by the presence of both armies. Using lecture, PowerPoint, and maps, this four-part presentation will examine these important events in American history that happened right in our own backyards. This program supports America 250PA Chester County. The programs are free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. The Chorister Academy at Augustus is one of the best ways in the Philadelphia region to provide your child with a tuition-free, world-class music education.

Our highly-regarded chorister program provides children and youth ages 7 - 17 with outstanding professional choral training, music theory instruction, leadership development, choir camps and trips. No previous musical experience is required, only an eagerness to learn and the ability to match pitch.

The Chorister Academy is open to families of all faith backgrounds and walks of life. Choristers, through their shared pursuit of musical excellence, develop focus, empathy, and teamwork skills as they build lasting friendships along the way.

During the academic year, choristers rehearse on Thursday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 and on Sunday mornings at 9:30, before the 10:30 service of Holy Communion. Choristers are trained to sing on a professional level and join adults in the Augustus Parish Choir to form a cohesive intergenerational choir. The choir sings a broad range of choral repertoire from the 16th century to present day.

We accept new students throughout the year but encourage families to register for the upcoming fall season, if possible. <h1>From Childhood to Independence: A Night at Longwood Gardens with Amigos de Jesús</h1>
In a country where poverty, limited educational opportunities and economic insecurity can leave young people with few choices for their futures, Amigos de Jesús is working to create another possibility: helping vulnerable children grow into educated, healthy and independent adults with the skills and opportunities to build their lives in Honduras.
On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Amigos de Jesús will bring that story to Longwood Gardens for Growing Together with Amigos, an evening celebrating the children and young adults of Amigos and inviting the greater Philadelphia community to become part of their journey.
Amigos de Jesús provides a safe and nurturing home for vulnerable children in Honduras, but its work does not end with providing a safe place to live. The organization walks alongside children from childhood into adulthood, providing education, healthcare, emotional support, faith formation, life skills and opportunities designed to prepare them for healthy, independent lives.
“Our goal isn't simply to care for a child today,” said Kelley Jackson, President and CEO of Amigos de Jesús. “We have to ask what success looks like when that child becomes an adult. Are they educated? Are they healthy? Do they have the skills and confidence to work, manage their lives and build a future within the realities of Honduras? That is the journey we are committed to.”
Guests attending Growing Together with Amigos are invited to enjoy Longwood Gardens throughout the day before gathering in the Fountain Room from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for a cocktail reception, stories and updates from Honduras, and a private illuminated fountain show.
The evening is designed not only to raise critical funds for the mission, but also to introduce new people throughout the region to Amigos de Jesús and the many ways individuals, families, schools, churches and businesses can become involved.
Tickets are $200 per person and include untimed admission to Longwood Gardens for the day, the evening reception and private illuminated fountain show.

MALVERN, Pa. &mdash; The Transportation Management Association of Chester County is inviting residents who usually drive alone to test one different way to work during National TDM Week, September 14 through 18.Transportation Demand Management, commonly called TDM, brings together practical strategies that give travelers more choices and help the transportation network carry people more efficiently. Those strategies include carpooling and vanpooling, public transportation, biking and walking, flexible or compressed schedules, remote work, trip planning, commuter benefits, and clearer travel information.
&ldquo;This is not an argument against the car, and it is not a demand for a perfect commute,&rdquo; said P. Timothy Phelps, executive director of TMACC. &ldquo;We are asking people to look at one workday and ask whether that trip could happen differently. One thoughtful experiment can show a commuter what works and show employers and communities what still needs to improve.&rdquo;
The latest available U.S. Census Bureau estimate underscores the opportunity. In 2024, an estimated 195,010 Chester County workers age 16 and over drove alone to work, representing 67.8 percent of county workers. An estimated 59,166 worked from home, or 20.6 percent. The American Community Survey figures describe workers&rsquo; usual means of transportation to work; they are not daily vehicle counts.
TMACC encourages commuters to choose an option that fits their actual lives. A resident might share a ride with a colleague, check a public transportation route, bicycle or walk when a safe connection exists, shift the workday outside the busiest travel period, or work remotely when the job and employer permit it. Employees who already work remotely one day can ask whether they can have preferred parking when sharing a ride.
TDM also depends on institutions. Employers can offer commuter benefits, preferred carpool parking, secure bicycle storage, flexible schedules, and clear hybrid-work expectations. Municipalities, planners, and transportation providers can strengthen the sidewalks, trails, transit connections, information, and land-use patterns that turn an option into a reliable choice.
Throughout the week, TMACC will publish practical information for Chester County commuters and invite residents to share what would make a different trip possible. The campaign supports the 2026 TDM Week theme, &ldquo;The Power of Transportation Options.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The first question is not, &lsquo;Can I change every commute?&rsquo;&rdquo; Phelps said. &ldquo;It is, &lsquo;Which one trip could I try?&rsquo; Start there, pay attention to the experience, and keep what works.&rdquo;
