PENNSYLVANIA — A state lawmaker is proposing legislation that would protect the privacy of motorists by restricting the use of license plate readers.
Rep. Jennifer O'Mara, a Delaware County Democrat, wants to regulate how automated license plate readers and the data they provide are used.
Automated license plate readers usually are used by law enforcement agencies that check data pulled from the read license plate against numerous public databases for information.

O'Mara contends this presents a problem regarding Pennsylvania motorists' data privacy. She wants to restrict how such data can and cannot be used.
“With no laws or regulations in force, there is nothing to prevent any collected data from being shared, sold, or used for unlawful and inappropriate purposes, " O'Mara stated in a memo to colleagues.
