Recently Closed Revered Pittsburgh Bar Site Sold

A Pittsburgh bar that had been popular for decades and recently shut down has a new owner. Get the details here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Hemingway's Cafe on Forbes Avenue in Oakland closed last month after more than 40 years on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Now, the university owns the building in which decades of drinks and entertainment were had.

According to Allegheny County Real Estate assessment records, the building was purchased on May 26 for $1.3 million. Pitt was listed as the buyer.

Pitt has not announced any plans for the building.

When Hemingway's announced its impending closure earlier this year, the bar's owners noted how its presence had impacted Oakland.

"Since opening in 1983, Hemingway’s has been more than just a bar — it’s been a home, a meeting place, and an Oakland staple for generations of students, alumni, locals, and friends at the heart of the University of Pittsburgh," a Facebook post stated.

Along with Peter's Pub, C.J. Barney's, Zelda's Greenhouse, Fuel & Fuddle and the Original Hot Dog Shop, Hemingway's with a part of the social fabric of a Pitt student's college experience. All of those places have closed in recent years.
