📰 News we're reading

1. Johnston parents report bus delays on first day of school (turnto10.com) — Families in Johnston saw serious bus delays on the first day of school, with some children arriving home more than an hour late as routes backed up around the new Johnston Elementary School. District leaders say a new school, new bus company, and new routes caused the chaos, and they're promising daily improvements plus added traffic enforcement at pickup and drop-off.

2. Community outcry for childcare heard by elementary school (johnstonsunrise.net subscription) — Johnston Elementary School is launching a new before- and after-school childcare program, giving local families supervised care from 7:30 a.m. until the start of school and from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Called Early Risers and After Hours, it costs $15 per child per session, offers sibling discounts, involves high school CTE students leading activities, and will start once a coordinator is hired.

3. Police chief stands by Flock, McKee seeks review (johnstonsunrise.net) — Johnston's police chief is defending the town's Flock license-plate cameras even as the governor asks all municipalities to pause new installations for a statewide review. He argues the five cameras already in Johnston help solve serious crimes and locate missing or endangered people, while stressing they are not used for traffic enforcement or tracking law-abiding residents.

4. Johnston man charged with DUI after crash involving motorcycle (wpri.com) — A Johnston man has been charged with DUI after a weekend crash on Central Avenue that injured a motorcyclist, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Police say the 41-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and also charged with refusing a chemical test as the investigation continues.
