• Westerly man, advocacy group sue for police records about mother's death (thewesterlysun.com) — A Westerly resident has teamed with the New England First Amendment Coalition to sue Narragansett police for access to records about his mother's 2021 death, arguing Rhode Island's public records law entitles him to more information. His mother spent decades living and working in Westerly, including running a local salon, and he hopes the case will finally bring clarity and closure without assigning blame.
   

• Fugitive from justice arrested in Westerly (newportdispatch.com) — Westerly police and the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested a 48-year-old local man wanted in Massachusetts for unarmed robbery and witness intimidation, along with several Westerly-based assault and drug-related warrants. In a separate case the same day, Pawtucket officers and the task force arrested a 20-year-old on firearm charges tied to weapons on school property and firing in a compact area.
   

• As utility rates rise, a new app helps Rhode Islanders track energy use in real time (oceanstatemedia.org) — Rhode Island Energy is rolling out a free Sense app that lets customers statewide, including those in Westerly, see which appliances are driving their electric bills in real time. Demonstrated recently at a Westerly news bureau, the tool arrives just as regulators approve higher distribution rates, partly offset by temporary bill credits, raising questions about how much households can really save on rising costs.
