📰 News we're reading

1. 'We will send hundreds of millions': Patrick pushes desalination during Corpus Christi visit (kvue.com) — Corpus Christi's ongoing water crisis took center stage as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick visited the city, urging local leaders to approve a desalination plant. He said the state is ready to send hundreds of millions of dollars for a project, but warned that Corpus Christi must first say yes to a plan its City Council has repeatedly rejected.

2. Corpus Christi restaurants adapt as city water develops a funky taste (kristv.com) — If your tap water in Corpus Christi tastes earthy or soapy, you're not alone—local restaurants are boiling water, stocking bottled drinks, and warning customers while still keeping prices steady. City utility officials say the bad taste comes from organic material after rising lake and river levels, insist the water is safe to drink, and expect flavor to improve within days as treatment adjustments take effect.

3. Video captures cat mauled to death by pack of dogs in the front yard of one Texas family (kiiitv.com) — On Corpus Christi's West Side near Driscoll Middle School, a family is pleading for action after surveillance video showed three stray dogs mauling their cat to death in their front yard. The owner says calls to 311 went unanswered, while a city councilman and Animal Control now promise humane traps and a more urgent response before another pet or person is harmed.

4. New filing reveals nearly $400 million price tag for Beacon Point data center (kiiitv.com) — A massive new Beacon Point AI data center is set to rise just outside Corpus Christi, with construction on the nearly $400 million project scheduled to start Sept. 28. While the facility won't be fully operational until 2028, it's expected to bring about 1,900 construction jobs and more than 200 permanent positions, even as City Council considers tighter rules for future data centers.

5. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez Introduces Bill to Federally Recognize Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas (house.gov) — Corpus Christi will host the Lipan Apache Tribe's 2026 Veterans Powwow as Congressman Vicente Gonzalez pushes a bill to grant the tribe long-sought federal recognition. If approved, the legislation would open access to key federal services and protections, supporting the tribe's cultural, religious, and economic life that's deeply rooted in South Texas, including the Coastal Bend.
