📰 News we're reading

1. El Paso ISD launches Cougar Care Center under Community Schools initiative (cbs4local.com) — Families in El Paso's Franklin feeder pattern now have a new Cougar Care Center offering food, clothing, hygiene items, and classes to help remove barriers to student success. Located within El Paso ISD's Community Schools initiative, the hub is designed to support all elementary, middle, and high school families in the area with practical, no-cost resources.

2. City of El Paso says four jurisdictions owe $1.51M for animal services, county tops list (kfoxtv.com) — City officials say El Paso County and three neighboring jurisdictions owe more than $1.5 million for animal services, with the county alone accounting for over $1 million in unpaid bills. County leaders acknowledge paying nearly $1 million recently but argue rising costs and confusing invoices need to be reconciled, as both sides work toward clearer billing terms that affect local taxpayers and animal care.

3. Strong storms last night leave thousands without power (kvia.com) — Overnight storms in El Paso brought heavy rain, lightning, and power outages that left more than 7,000 residents without electricity late Wednesday, especially in East El Paso near Las Palmas and Pellicano. While power has been restored, El Paso Electric's national outage rankings and its explanation that thunderstorms are the leading cause of local outages raise ongoing questions about grid resilience for area customers.

4. World Suicide Prevention Day starts at El Paso's 9-8-8 call center (kvia.com) — El Paso residents are being reminded that the 9-8-8 crisis line is available around the clock in English and Spanish for anyone facing suicidal thoughts or overwhelming stress. Staff at the local Emergence Health Network call center say calls have tripled, and they can quickly connect callers to additional mental health services when needed.
