Austin Man Goes Through H-E-B Checkout With Lots Of Seafood. Then The Cashier Asks What It’s For
'This is so good.'
A brief checkout-line exchange at an H-E-B has done what years of signage sometimes can’t: alert Pflugerville residents that a small seafood-focused restaurant has been sitting downtown, largely unnoticed, all along. And the response online suggests the tiny eatery may be due for some growth.
In a viral TikTok clip, H-E-B cashier Lizette Morales (@papaaliz) shares how her curiosity and conversation with a local restaurateur led her to make a trip to try out a meal. And her positive review for Rec's Hushpuppie Heaven was welcomed by most of the commenters on the video.
“There was this guy today that came in, and he was just buying a lot of seafood, and I love seafood. And he was telling me how he has a small business that's three minutes away,” she said in the video that’s been viewed more than 49,000 times. “This is so good. … I do wanna start supporting small, all these small businesses that I come across, mentioned at work.”

Morales said encounters like this are fairly common in her line of work, and that ringing up bulk produce, seafood, or specialty items often signals that a customer is shopping on behalf of a restaurant or food business rather than for a household.
After learning the restaurant was located just minutes away in downtown Pflugerville, Morales placed a pickup order after her shift. The video struck a chord with local viewers, many of whom said they had either driven past the location without realizing what it was or had never heard of the restaurant.

A Small Business Many Locals Missed
Rec’s Hushpuppie Heaven is located at 200 E. Pecan St., near the intersection of Pecan Street and Railroad Avenue in downtown Pflugerville. Commenters familiar with the area noted that the building previously housed other food concepts, including a hot dog restaurant, which may have contributed to confusion about what currently operates there.
Several viewers said the video prompted them to add the restaurant to their list of places to try, while others expressed surprise that it had been open for some time without drawing much attention.
One of the most-discussed aspects of the video wasn’t the food itself, but the fact that a restaurant owner was purchasing seafood at a grocery store rather than through a wholesale distributor.
In response to questions from viewers, Morales explained that the owner told her buying ingredients from H-E-B allowed for fresher produce and less waste. Several commenters with food-service experience backed that up, noting that distributors often require minimum orders, charge higher prices for smaller volumes, or deliver more product than a small operation can realistically use before it spoils.
Industry experts have long noted that smaller or newer restaurants frequently rely on grocery stores to maintain flexibility, especially when menus are limited or demand fluctuates. The practice is common enough that many grocery chains, including H-E-B, actively court small business customers through bulk pricing and dedicated business accounts.
TikTok As Modern Word Of Mouth
While the clip has been widely viewed, much of its impact appears to be local rather than national. Comments repeatedly referenced Pflugerville landmarks, nearby salons and businesses, and the feeling that TikTok’s algorithm had delivered the video to exactly the right audience.
“My FYP is getting really local,” one user wrote.
That hyper-local visibility mirrors the kind of word-of-mouth marketing small businesses once relied on almost exclusively in the form of neighbors talking to neighbors, but at a scale that can reach thousands of people within days.
The comments section quickly turned into a mix of restaurant recommendations, neighborhood pride, and encouragement to support locally owned businesses. Some viewers shared their own experiences eating at Rec’s Hushpuppie Heaven, while others said they planned to visit for the first time.
Several small business owners also chimed in, using the moment to highlight their own services or upcoming openings nearby, underscoring how closely tied Pflugerville’s downtown businesses are to one another.
In the end, the video’s success wasn’t driven by polished production or paid promotion. It came from an everyday exchange between a cashier who noticed an unusual grocery order and asked a question, which led to a discovery many locals say they’re glad to have made.
As Pflugerville continues to grow, moments like that offer a reminder that some of the most effective ways to support small businesses still start close to home, sometimes right at the checkout line.
