📰 News we're reading

1. Texas schools can still paddle students. These San Antonio-area districts say no (expressnews.com) — Several major San Antonio-area school districts, including Northside, North East, San Antonio ISD and Harlandale, have formally banned corporal punishment even though it remains legal under Texas law. Other nearby districts like Somerset and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City recently removed paddling from their policies, reflecting growing scrutiny of physical discipline in schools. Parents can still opt out individually in districts that allow it.

2. San Antonio school district improves state grade after TEA re-scores STAAR tests (star-telegram.com) — Southwest ISD in San Antonio just saw its state accountability rating jump from a C to a B after the Texas Education Agency manually re-scored some STAAR exams. The change boosts both the district's overall grade and individual student scores, while renewing debate over computer-based "hybrid" scoring that has left many Texas students with zeros on written responses.

3. Property tax hike or broader department cuts? San Antonio leaders dig in as debate continues (kens5.com) — San Antonio City Council is wrestling with how to close a projected $157.7 million budget deficit by 2028, weighing a possible property tax hike against deep cuts to staff and popular programs. Council members are split over raising taxes, while Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones urges creative solutions as town halls continue and a final 2027 budget vote looms on Sept. 17.

4. 125-mph passenger trains could connect San Antonio and Austin, Texas, in about an hour: HNTB study (smartcitiesdive.com) — A new feasibility study says 125-mph trains could link San Antonio and Austin in under 65 minutes via a dedicated $13.5 billion rail line. The preferred route would largely follow I‑10 and SH 130, with a potential San Antonio terminal at the Alamodome and funding likely requiring federal, local, and public‑private partnerships.
