Opening with two chords of seismic power, Beethoven’s groundbreaking “Eroica” Symphony redefined the 19th-century symphony as a musical odyssey of vast emotional scope. Battles rage and harmonies clash with wild abandon as Beethoven channels the turbulent world around him, confronting grief and despair before ending in a heroic blaze of glory.

Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki opens the evening with two orchestral poems by her homeland’s musical hero, Sibelius. En Saga pays tribute to Finland’s rich history of mythic storytelling, while Finlandia stands as a testament to the Finnish people’s strength in their quest for independence from Imperial Russia. “We fought 600 years for our freedom,” Sibelius wrote, “and Finlandia is the story of this fight. It is the song of our battle, our hymn of victory.”

Employing a titanic orchestra, including wind and thunder machines and offstage brass bands, Richard Strauss’ “An Alpine Symphony” is as awe-inspiring as the grand mountains it portrays. Navigate a cinematic musical journey inspired by the composer’s teenage adventures in the Austrian Alps, where you’ll take in crashing waterfalls, flowering meadows and raging storms as Strauss conjures nature in all its power and majesty.

Pianist Daniil Trifonov — an artist of staggering, superhuman ability — returns to the DSO with his “elegant touch, witty grace and poetic insight” (New York Times) to perform Scriabin’s mesmerizing Piano Concerto. A rhapsodic work that moves between moments of wistful melancholy and fevered romance, Scriabin’s concerto is sure to calm the mind and set hearts aflame.

Saint-Saëns transforms the concert hall into a cavernous cathedral in his mighty “Organ Symphony.” A self-portrait in sound that channels the composer’s lifelong love of sacred music, this symphony unleashes the thunderous sound of the Lay Family Concert Organ as it scales the heights of spiritual euphoria. “I gave everything to it,” Saint-Saëns wrote of his final symphony, “What I have here accomplished I will never achieve again.”

At the center of the program, Grieg’s Piano Concerto brims with an endless flow of melodies — from the heart-stopping avalanche of crashing chords that opens the work, to the central lullaby and the finale’s rollicking dance music. Pianist Kiron Atom Tellian brings his “incredible combination of sensitivity and taste” (Tennessean) to Grieg’s musical love letter to his native Norway.
