📰 News we're reading

1. Burlington forms committee to combat graffiti in the city (kimt.com) — Burlington officials are creating a Graffiti Abatement Committee to tackle tagging across the Queen City with help from residents. The city is partnering with PaintCare and Chittenden Solid Waste to provide free leftover paint for murals and cleanup. Councilor Evan Litwin says the goal is to empower neighborhoods while staying within tight city budgets and eventually letting the community steer the effort.

2. Kitchen renovation underway at COTS meal site (mynbc5.com) — Burlington's COTS Daystation on North Avenue is undergoing a major kitchen and dining room renovation while still serving free daily noontime meals to people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers are adapting with grill and offsite-prepared meals as COTS works to raise the final $50,000 for the project and installs new safety technology to quickly detect medical emergencies in private areas.

3. Problem Properties: Burlington publishes list of noncompliant vacant buildings (wcax.com) — Burlington officials have launched an online list calling out the city's top noncompliant vacant buildings, aiming to pressure owners to fix code issues or return properties to use. The list highlights blighted spots like Pearl Street and Pine Street sites, ties into the city's housing crisis response, and may soon include city-owned Memorial Auditorium as redevelopment plans advance.

4. Education (sevendaysvt.com) — Several education- and service-focused employers in and around Burlington are hiring, including Mercy Connections, the First Unitarian Universalist Society, and the Kieselstein Autism Program. Roles range from program associates and ELL staff to a temporary religious professional and direct support for an autistic adult. Nearby communities like Colchester, Vergennes, Jericho, and Enosburg Falls also list openings that Burlington-area residents could reasonably commute to.

5. VCIA 2026 Conference Wrap-Up: Captives Grow, Aided by Technology - Risk & Insurance (riskandinsurance.com) — Burlington just hosted more than 1,200 captive insurance professionals for the 41st annual VCIA conference, underscoring Vermont's status as a global hub for captive insurance.
