Body-Worn Cameras Deployed In Arlington County Detention Center

Arlington County deputies will now wear Axon body cameras inside the county's detention facility to improve safety and transparency.

ARLINGTON, VA — The Arlington County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday the implementation of a body-worn camera program within the Arlington County Detention Facility.

The initiative expands the use of Axon body-worn cameras to deputies working in the jail. Previously, the technology was utilized by the office primarily for transportation and civil process duties.

"One of my top priorities is maintaining a safe, progressive jail that supports both staff and those in our custody," Sheriff Jose Quiroz said in a statement. "Body-worn cameras strengthen transparency, support our deputies in their daily work, and enhance safety throughout the facility".

The cameras are intended to provide an objective record of interactions to assist in investigative processes and protect both staff and incarcerated individuals, the sheriff's office said. According to the release, similar programs in other jurisdictions have resulted in:

  • Reductions in assaults on staff.
  • Decreases in use-of-force incidents.
  • Fewer grievances filed by incarcerated individuals.

The Arlington County Sheriff's Office employs approximately 300 deputy sheriffs and civilian staff. Beyond corrections, the agency is responsible for courtroom security, inmate transportation, and the service of civil process for a county population of 240,900 residents.
