📰 News we're reading

1. McLean and Chantilly commercial centers sold in $58 million deal (ffxnow.com) — A major $58 million sale has transferred ownership of the West Fairfax Commerce Center on Lee Road in Chantilly, along with several other Northern Virginia commercial properties, to Aggregate Real Estate Investors. The largely leased complex hosts a mix of industrial, retail, and restaurant tenants, and the new owner plans aesthetic upgrades while keeping the site operating as commercial space, which could subtly reshape the look and feel of this Chantilly business hub.

2. Supervisor Storck seeks funding for two more 24-hour ballot drop boxes (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax County supervisors are weighing how to spend a $63.5 million surplus, and one proposal would devote $900,000 to design and bid work for a new Chantilly Arts Hub. Alongside a push for more 24-hour ballot drop boxes and restored crossing guards, this funding decision at the Sept. 15 meeting could shape Chantilly's future cultural space and community programming for years to come.

3. A Nondescript Warehouse in Chantilly Houses 1,000 Bob Ross Paintings (northernvirginiamag.com) — Tucked inside an ordinary Chantilly warehouse is a climate-controlled trove of about 1,000 original Bob Ross paintings, making the community an unlikely center of the painter's legacy. Bob Ross Inc., still based there, quietly manages global licensing, instruction, and preservation efforts, while most drivers pass by unaware that this low-key Chantilly building safeguards one of the world's largest single-artist collections.

4. Crossing guards return to Fairfax County high schools after student struck near South Lakes (wusa9.com) — Crossing guards and police officers are being temporarily restored at 11 Fairfax County high school locations, including Chantilly High, while officials reassess pedestrian safety after a student was struck near South Lakes. The move follows budget cuts that removed high school crossing guards and growing pressure from parents and school board members to use current traffic data and consider permanent safety and infrastructure fixes.

5. 6 Shops Serving Up Over-the-Top and Classic Ice Cream Sandwiches in Northern Virginia (northernvirginiamag.com subscription) — Chantilly dessert fans can try SoftSpot's baked-to-order cookie and soft-serve creation on Metrotech Drive, one of several standout ice cream sandwich spots featured across Northern Virginia. From classic cookie-and-ice-cream combos to over-the-top custardwiches, the roundup offers nearby options for a fun, customizable treat close to home and in neighboring towns.
