Man Fatally Shot After Beltway Attacks Was U.S. State Department Employee: Report

Virginia State Police said Jared Llamado killed a woman and a dog and injured three others. A report said Llamado was a federal worker.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The man who was shot and killed by a Virginia state trooper following a fatal stabbing and a crash on Interstate 495 was an employee with the U.S. State Department, according to a report.

Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean, died Monday after a confrontation with police. Before he was shot, authorities said Llamado fatally stabbed a woman and injured three others in a fit of road rage following a crash on southbound I-495 at exit 52 in Fairfax County. Police said Llamado also fatally stabbed his dog during the altercation.

"When the trooper arrived on scene, he was confronted by a male suspect carrying a knife,” police said. “The trooper then shot the suspect in self-defense.”

Authorities responded to the incident on the Beltway around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, according to Virginia State Police.

Police said Llamado fatally stabbed 39-year-old Michele Adams during the altercation. Three others also suffered stab wounds and were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries, police said. None of the victims were passengers in Llamado's vehicle, police said Tuesday.

Police have not said what caused the crash or what exactly led up to the stabbings.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Fairfax Field Office is investigating the shooting, according to police, who said the trooper involved in the incident was not injured. The trooper was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The incident snarled traffic on the Beltway for several hours on Sunday. Authorities closed all southbound lanes, with traffic backed up about four miles, according to the state transportation department.
