Join the Animal Allies Academy, an engaging program designed for kids ages 6-9 &amp; 10-12 who are eager to learn about life at an animal shelter! Kids enrolled in the Animal Allies Academy will meet on various weekend days once a month from 10:00am-2:00pm. This program will be held at the Fredericksburg SPCA, where your child will get one-on-one interaction with animals! Participants will discover the importance of animal care, shelter etiquette, and responsible pet ownership through hands-on experiences and interactive activities.
Please be sure to confirm the age group you are registering for and that your child falls within that range.

Make Sunday mornings a weekly tradition--hike three-to-five miles paired with a furry buddy and enjoy the fresh air on local trails. Meet at ODHS at 7:45 a.m. to be matched with a rescue dog, and set out on a caravan to one of the many beautiful trails in Fredericksburg.

Weekly Sunday Hikes with Old Dominion Humane Society Rescue Dogs

Old Dominion Humane Society

Old Dominion Humane Society’s (ODHS) weekly Sunday hikes will begin at 7:45 a.m. beginning April 5. The start time for the spring and summer months gets hikers and rescue dogs out on the trails to take advantage of cooler temperatures since it gets lighter earlier. (The fall and winter start time is 8:45 a.m.)
The popular hikes are three to five miles, and ODHS volunteers match participants with rescue dogs. Guests will caravan with their four-legged friends in their cars to a different local trail each week guided by ODHS volunteers. Crates are available at the facility.
The benefits for both humans and dogs are a morning out on a beautiful local trail, the chance to meet other dog lovers in the community, vigorous exercise and an opportunity to help the dogs socialize and get out of the facility. 
ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Adoption events are Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., Fridays from 6-8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins. Community Conversations returns with a focus on one of the most immediate, and often overlooked, forms of governance: the systems that shape the neighborhoods we live in every day.
HOAs and Historic District boards are where local decisions actually happen. They determine what gets built, what gets preserved, and how shared spaces and neighborhood character evolve over time. Unlike distant institutions, these are bodies made up of residents, operating through processes that are open to participation and direct involvement.
Homeowners Associations (HOAs) are private, member-driven boards that manage shared spaces and uphold agreed-upon community standards. Historic District boards, by contrast, operate through a public process to preserve places deemed to serve a broader community interest. Despite their differences, both rely on rules, review processes, and citizen participation, and both function as some of the most local, accessible forms of governance.
This event is not a lecture. It is a guided, discussion-based conversation designed to bring community members into dialogue with one another with an expert in the field providing guidance. Together, we will explore how these systems work, how they affect daily life, and how residents can step into a more active role in shaping their communities.
Whether you have direct experience with an HOA or Historic District, or are simply curious about how decisions get made at the neighborhood level, this conversation is an opportunity to engage, ask questions, and better understand where your voice fits.

Plena is a vibrant Afro-Puerto Rican musical and dance tradition rooted in rhythm, storytelling, and community. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Plena movement while exploring the cultural roots of this joyful tradition. The workshop will conclude with a live Plena jam session, and attendees are encouraged to bring panderos, güiros, and other instruments to join the music.About the Artist Raúl De La Paz is a Puerto Rican dancer, choreographer, and artistic director with more than 30 years of experience in folkloric and theatrical dance. His work spans major folklore companies and musical theater productions, with a movement style that ranges from Jazz and Salsa to the Puerto Rican national dances of Bomba and Plena. As Artistic Director of the Gíbaro de Puerto Rico Folklore Company, he has represented Puerto Rico in festivals and residencies throughout Europe, the United States, and Latin America, sharing workshops that connect participants to Puerto Rican culture through movement.

Virginia Veterans: Make Your Book This Christmas 2025

Quantico, Va. – Dec. 25, 2025 – This Christmas season, Virginia veterans are being offered a meaningful gift: the chance to preserve their military stories in a professionally printed hardcover book—at no cost. Words of Veterans was created by Alex K. Sebby, a former enlisted U.S. Marine who served from 1999 to 2003. The online platform helps U.S. Veterans document their service, memories, and life experiences in their own words. Drawing on best practices from the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, the tool guides veterans step-by-step through writing their personal history and turning it into a beautifully bound book to share with family for generations. In celebration of Christmas 2025, Sebby announced a special initiative made possible by a grant from the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. The grant provides 1,000 vouchers for U.S. Veterans living in Virginia to have their book printed and shipped free of charge. “This is about honoring service and making sure veterans’ voices are never lost,” said Sebby. “Too many stories disappear because they’re never written down. This program preserves those stories for families and future generations.” Veterans write their story at their own pace using the Words of Veterans platform. Once complete, the book is professionally printed as a high-quality hardcover and shipped directly to the veteran. To qualify, veterans must live in Virginia and redeem a voucher before the program deadline. All books must be printed and shipped by March 31, 2026.
