More speed safety cameras going up on Interstate 81 in a Harrisonburg work zone (augustafreepress.com) — Drivers on I-81 through Harrisonburg will soon see more speed safety cameras in the work zone between mile markers 242 and 247, with a 30-day warning-only period starting Aug. 31. After that, going 10 mph or more over the limit can bring a $100 civil citation by mail, and residents can contest tickets if they believe the cameras erred.

2. Harrisonburg man involved in police standoff sentenced to 1 year in jail (rocktownnow.com) — A Harrisonburg man has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after a Rockingham County jury convicted him of misdemeanor brandishing a firearm, while acquitting him of two abduction charges. Police say the incident began when he swung a machete on Virginia Avenue, then retreated into an occupied trailer with additional weapons, prompting a lengthy SWAT response before he surrendered.

Health district highlights maternal care needs in Harrisonburg (whsv.com) — Harrisonburg health officials say one in five local births involve late or no prenatal care, raising concerns about risks for mothers and babies. The Central Shenandoah Health District is partnering with groups like the new Rocktown Maternal Health Hub to connect expecting parents with earlier, easier access to services and help families navigate the system.

Harrisonburg police to increase DUI patrols for Saturation Saturday (whsv.com) — Harrisonburg police are putting extra officers on the roads for "Saturation Saturday" DUI enforcement, targeting impaired drivers ahead of Labor Day weekend.
