📰 News we're reading

1. New Kent survey respondents overwhelmingly say ‘no data centers' (pilotonline.com) — New Kent residents who answered a recent county survey overwhelmingly opposed allowing data centers, with 87% saying they would not encourage them. As officials update zoning rules and consider a separate data center policy, many respondents urged preserving New Kent’s rural character while favoring small-scale businesses, food trucks, and outdoor recreation instead.

2. Community rallies to help New Kent basketball player airlifted to Richmond after serious crash (wtvr.com) — A New Kent High School basketball player, Kris Leeper, is recovering from serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash on Route 60 near Providence Forge that led to him being airlifted to a Richmond hospital. His team and the wider New Kent community are rallying to support his family with donations and meal gift cards during his surgeries and long recovery. Residents are being asked to step up and help however they can.

3. A Computer Warning Led an 86-Year-Old Into an $11,500 Scam (wealthofgeeks.com) — An 86-year-old New Kent woman lost $11,500 after a fake computer warning led her into a gift card scam that is now under investigation by the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Lee Bailey says such fraud reports are rising and stresses that real banks will never ask customers to move money into gift cards or keep conversations secret, urging residents to report suspicious contacts quickly.

4. I-64 speed cameras may be coming to James City County (pilotonline.com) — Drivers traveling I-64 through New Kent should prepare for lower, variable speed limits in the construction zone and the likelihood of more speed cameras similar to those already generating millions for the county. VDOT will soon activate work-zone speed changes between the New Kent Courthouse/Providence Forge exit and Lightfoot, with widening projects stretching into 2027–2029 and New Kent’s sheriff eyeing additional enforcement equipment.
