ACPS Takes Steps To Strengthen Math Instruction Across District

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City Public Schools is expanding its enVision Math model lesson program to every school in the division, providing teachers with additional training to strengthen math instruction across grade levels.

The expansion is being funded through a Virginia Department of Education Mathematics Innovation Grant awarded to ACPS in February, according to the school division.

ACPS explains that the program gives teachers an opportunity to watch math instruction with Alexandria students and then work with colleagues and expert trainers to discuss the lesson, the instructional strategies used and ways to apply them in their own classrooms.

The goal is to provide more consistent math instruction throughout the school division while helping students develop both problem-solving skills and an understanding of the reasoning behind mathematical concepts, according to ACPS.

The expanded model lesson program is also intended to help teachers collaborate across schools and grade levels. Teachers participating in the sessions observe lessons in actual classrooms before taking part in planning and reflection with other educators and trainers.

The division already uses Savvas' enVision as an instructional resource from kindergarten through Algebra 2.
