All Right Turns On Red Lights In Old Town Could Be Banned After Traffic Board Vote

The Traffic and Parking Board will vote Monday on a proposal to ban right turns on red lights throughout Old Town.

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board will decide Monday on whether to restrict right turns on red lights at every intersection in Old Town.

The staff recommendation is that the city ban right turns on red lights at every signalized intersection from the area bounded by First Street to the north, the City boundary to the south, Telegraph Road and the railroad tracks to the west and the Potomac River to the east, as well at the intersections of Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road and Quaker Lane/Janney’s Lane/Seminary Road.

Staff cites traffic accidents and particularly pedestrian fatalities as the reason for the restrictions, saying the vast majority of pedestrian crashes involve vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians when turning left or when turning right on a red light.
