Rare Blue Tree Frog Draws Crowds To Alexandria Park: Report

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A rare blue-colored tree frog has become a local celebrity at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, drawing wildlife enthusiasts and photographers hoping to spot the tiny amphibian, The Washington Post reported.

The frog is an American green tree frog with a condition called axanthism, which reduces or eliminates yellow pigmentation, making the animal appear blue, according to the report.

Experts told The Post that completely blue frogs are rarely seen and scientists remain unsure whether the condition is caused by genetics, diet or environmental factors.

Researchers have found that the D.C. region, particularly areas east of Interstate 95, appears to have an unusual concentration of blue green tree frogs. However, experts do not know why.
