The proposal aims to reduce overcrowding at some precincts with more than 5,000 registered voters.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County will hold a public hearing Dec. 8 on proposed changes to voting precinct boundaries and polling places.

The proposal aims to reduce overcrowding at some precincts with more than 5,000 registered voters. State law limits newly established precincts to 5,000 registered voters and requires boundary revisions under certain conditions.

The proposal would create Reston 4 from portions of the Cameron Glen and Reston 1 precincts. An estimated 2,021 voters from Cameron Glen and 428 voters from Reston 1 would move into the new precinct.

Voters remaining in Cameron Glen and Reston 1 would keep their current polling places at the North County Human Services Building and Lake Anne Elementary School, respectively. Reston 4 voters would cast ballots at the Reston Teen Center on Sunset Hills Road.

A new precinct, 333 Coppermine, would take an estimated 2,205 voters from the 332 Coates precinct. Its polling place would be Floris United Methodist Church on Frying Pan Road in Herndon.

Polling Place Moves

Mason

The polling place for 520 Skyline would move from the Minnie H. Peyton Community Center to Arlington Moose Lodge on Scoville Street in Falls Church. The new location would be closer to the precinct boundaries and would reduce crowding at the community center, which also serves Precinct 501 Baileys.

The polling place for 506 Holmes would move from Bailey's Elementary School to Culmore Community Library on Knollwood Drive in Falls Church. This would return the precinct to its previous polling place following HVAC repairs at the library.

Tysons

The polling place for 731 Tysons would move from the recently closed PARC building to Boro Station on Greensboro Station Place.

The boundary between the Tysons and Jones Branch precincts would also be adjusted, moving 464 registered voters from 731 Tysons to 738 Jones Branch. The committee said those voters live within walking distance of the Jones Branch polling place.

None of the proposed changes are final. Following the public hearing, they would require approval from the Board of Supervisors and a certification of no objection from the Virginia attorney general before taking effect.

Under the proposal, Reston 1 and Coates would retain an estimated 5,017 and 5,366 registered voters, respectively. Both totals exceed the 5,000-voter threshold in state law. It is unclear how those proposed totals would be addressed.
