Reston Man Indicted On Federal Drug, Gun Charges
A federal grand jury indicted a Reston man on five drug and firearm charges following an investigation into alleged drug trafficking.

RESTON, VA — A Reston man previously charged with federal firearms offenses has been indicted by a federal grand jury on five felony counts involving cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and firearms, according to court records filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.
Michael Broffitt faces three counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, one count of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, and one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
The indictment, returned Wednesday in the Eastern District of Virginia, expands the case against Broffitt, who was arrested in July following a federal investigation into alleged drug trafficking in Reston. The original criminal complaint charged him with two firearms offenses.

Grand Jury Adds Drug Trafficking Charges
The three new drug counts allege that Broffitt knowingly possessed cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine with the intent to distribute them on or about May 19, 2026, in Reston.
A fourth count alleges that Broffitt knowingly used and carried a firearm during and in relation to those alleged drug trafficking offenses and possessed a firearm in furtherance of the crimes.

The fifth count charges Broffitt with illegally possessing a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE 9 mm pistol equipped with an extended magazine, along with a box of 9 mm ammunition, despite having a previous felony conviction.
Federal prosecutors also cited Broffitt's prior Virginia conviction for possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance. According to the indictment, he served more than 12 months in prison and was released around December 2020.
The indictment includes a forfeiture notice seeking property allegedly connected to the offenses. The property seized May 19 includes the Smith & Wesson pistol, associated ammunition and magazines, a separate box of 9 mm ammunition, and $4,696 in cash.
If Broffitt is convicted, prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of firearms and ammunition involved in the offenses, as well as proceeds and property connected to the alleged drug trafficking.
Previous Investigation And Arrest
As Patch previously reported, the federal charges stemmed from a Fairfax County Police Department narcotics investigation in which authorities alleged Broffitt sold methamphetamine and suspected fentanyl to a confidential informant between March 10 and April 29.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for Broffitt's residence in the 11600 block of Foxclove Road in Reston. During the May 19 search, officers reported recovering suspected crack cocaine, methamphetamine, other narcotics, digital scales, packaging materials, cash and a Smith & Wesson handgun beneath a mattress.

According to the original federal affidavit, investigators also recovered approximately 22 grams of suspected crack cocaine and 23 grams of suspected methamphetamine from a safe that Broffitt allegedly carried outside the residence as officers began executing the warrant.
The investigation was subsequently adopted federally, resulting in the initial firearms charges filed in July. The new indictment adds three drug distribution counts stemming from the May 19 incident.
Arraignment Scheduled In Alexandria
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff in Alexandria.
Broffitt's arraignment was initially scheduled for Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. However, his attorney, Sebastian Marks Norton, filed a motion Thursday seeking to continue the proceeding until Nov. 12.
As of the latest available court docket, the judge had not ruled on that request.
Broffitt remains subject to a federal detention order. The court records reviewed do not show a plea entered in response to the new indictment.
The charges are allegations, and Broffitt is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
