📰 News we're reading

1. Guided Tour of the Shockoe Institute (vcu.edu) — Richmond residents can join a free guided tour of the new Shockoe Institute today, Sept. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Main Street Station. The tour explores Shockoe's deep Indigenous, colonial, and slave-trade history and introduces a 12,000-square-foot educational space focused on understanding the legacy of racial slavery in Richmond and beyond.

2. Experts weigh in on impact of extended school closures on Richmond students (wric.com) — Bellevue Elementary in Richmond expects to welcome students back Thursday, Sept. 10, after mold cleanup and air testing in 10 affected classrooms, following a six-day closure. Experts say the missed time, similar to recent closures at Barack Obama Elementary, can be made up, and Richmond Public Schools have not yet said if makeup days will be added.

3. RRHA CEO says additional review is unlikely after 'disturbing' sexual misconduct allegations (wric.com) — Richmond residents in RRHA communities are learning that agency leaders don't plan an additional outside review of previously investigated sexual misconduct allegations involving maintenance workers at Gilpin Court. The CEO and board chair say internal and legal reviews led to one firing and one reassignment, while Councilmember Kenya Gibson continues pressing for stronger accountability and protections for public housing residents.

4. Richmond wants to intervene in the Dominion merger. But the Council needs a do-over vote (richmonder.org) — Richmond City Council stumbled procedurally on a fast-tracked vote to formally intervene in Dominion's proposed merger with NextEra, a deal that could affect local electric rates, city costs, and thousands of Richmond jobs. Leaders are now scrambling to call another special meeting before Friday's deadline so the city can secure a formal voice in the State Corporation Commission case.

5. Richmond officer becomes one of few hundred double organ donors in the country (nbc12.com) — A Richmond Police officer has become one of the nation's few repeat living organ donors, giving both a kidney and part of his liver through VCU and UVA Health. Now back on patrol in Richmond, he hopes his story encourages more locals to consider living donation or at least get evaluated as potential donors.
