📰 News we're reading

• Exchange Northwest to announce new Civic Innovation Challenge at Oct. 14 forum (bellevuewa.gov) — Bellevue residents and innovators are invited to an Oct. 14 Exchange Northwest Forum at Bellevue City Hall, where the city and partners will unveil the next Civic Innovation Challenge. The evening includes a panel on "human-first" artificial intelligence and offers teams a chance to compete for funded pilot projects with local and state agencies running January through June 2027.

• New light rail station open in North Seattle's Pinehurst neighborhood (thenewstribune.com) — A new Pinehurst light rail station in North Seattle is now open, improving Link 1 travel times to the U District, downtown, and Sea‑Tac Airport. Because the line also crosses Lake Washington to serve Bellevue and Redmond, this added stop strengthens regional connections for Bellevue commuters heading to jobs, flights, and other destinations around Puget Sound.

• Seattle hemorrhages more than 18,000 jobs as Bellevue adds thousands: report (kvi.com) — Bellevue is gaining more than 5,000 jobs while Seattle sheds over 18,000, highlighting a regional shift in employment, office values, and business investment across Lake Washington. The report credits Bellevue's lower taxes and costs as a major draw for companies like Amazon, while Seattle's higher business taxes and downtown vacancy rates raise concerns about long‑term competitiveness.
