📰 News we're reading

• New data shines a light on more opportunities for suicide prevention in King County (publichealthinsider.com) — Kirkland's 24/7 Connections Crisis Care Center, opened in 2024, is highlighted as King County's first walk-in hub for urgent mental health and substance-use support, with up to 90 days of follow-up care. New linked data dashboards reveal when and where suicide risk is highest, guiding investments from the Crisis Care Centers Levy and supporting efforts like gun lockbox giveaways, an October 17 Burien gun buyback, and expanded 988 mobile crisis response across the county.

• Best private high schools in Washington (ncwlife.com) — Families in Kirkland will notice Eastside Preparatory School ranked #3 among Washington's best private high schools, with strong academics and small class sizes. The statewide list compares 25 schools on factors like college enrollment, diversity, and student-teacher ratios, helping parents gauge options across the region if they're considering private education paths.

• Noise cameras capture license plates to ticket loud vehicles in US (savannahherald.com) — Kirkland recently ran a Street Racing Noise Pilot Program, using cameras and sensitive microphones at two trouble spots to see if technology can reliably pinpoint which car is actually too loud. While the city didn't issue tickets or warnings, the test puts Kirkland among a growing list of U.S. communities exploring noise cameras, raising questions about accuracy, privacy, and whether future enforcement could target modified exhausts and street racing near local neighborhoods.
