📰 News we're reading

1. North America's Largest Library Materials-Sorting System Opens in Renton (mynorthwest.com) — Renton is now home to King County Library System's new $5.2 million Central Sorting facility, the largest of its kind in North America, which just opened yesterday. The high-tech system dramatically speeds up and streamlines how books and other materials move through KCLS, reinforcing Renton's role as a key regional hub and bringing more efficient service to local library users.

2. Suspect in custody after shooting on SR 167 in Renton; victim hospitalized (komonews.com) — A driver was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening shoulder wound after a shooting Thursday evening on the southbound SR 167 off-ramp to 180th Street in Renton, and another driver is now in custody. Washington State Patrol troopers are still investigating the incident, which marks the second freeway shooting in King County this week and raises fresh concerns about roadway safety for Renton commuters.

3. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson's favorability drops in new poll (fox13seattle.com) — Renton readers will notice FOX 13 flagging that the city's planned Flock license-plate cameras are on hold while officials prepare a virtual town hall, signaling an upcoming public-safety debate close to home. That update appears alongside new polling showing Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson's favorability plunging 20 points amid concerns over safety and transparency.

4. New initiative to support immigrants, refugees in King County (seattleweekly.com) — A new King County fund, backed in part by the Renton Regional Community Foundation, will invest $900,000 to support immigrants and refugees, especially in South King County. RRCF will match at least $250,000 and help lead the effort, which focuses on basic needs, safety, mental health, and rapid response for families affected by federal immigration enforcement.
