📰 News we're reading

1. Family files $30M tort claim over fatal Seattle police shooting (fox13seattle.com) — Seattle readers should know a family has filed a $30 million tort claim over the 2025 police shooting of Andrew Seay outside the Southwest Precinct in West Seattle, alleging officers escalated a mental health call and ignored de-escalation options. The city has 60 days to respond before a wrongful death lawsuit can proceed, and officials have not yet offered a detailed public explanation.

2. Cyclist's hit-and-run puts new focus on safety along Seattle's Aurora Avenue (king5.com) — A recent hit-and-run that seriously injured a bicyclist on Aurora Avenue North is intensifying pressure for safety upgrades along this major Seattle corridor. City transportation officials are already installing new crossings and refining long-term redesign plans, while Seattle's renewed Vision Zero push urges faster, interim fixes to protect people biking and walking along Aurora.

3. Seattle police have more surveillance cameras than previously reported (seattletimes.com) — Seattle residents should know that police now have access to 1,320 cameras through the Real Time Crime Center, including hundreds of privately owned devices quietly integrated via the Connect Seattle program. Oversight officials are raising privacy and transparency concerns, noting gaps in policy around how private cameras are used, where they're placed, and how long footage is stored, while city leaders promise clearer rules by 2027.

4. WA Gov. Ferguson releases texts on Seattle mass shooting presser delay (fox13seattle.com) — Newly released texts from Governor Bob Ferguson's office shed light on why it took nearly five hours to brief the public after the Bite of Seattle mass shooting at Seattle Center, which left three dead and four injured. Messages among state leaders and Seattle officials suggest the press conference was delayed while dignitaries, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Mayor Katie Wilson, were awaited, even as police and media stood by.

5. State-wide burn ban ends today; some jurisdictions may still have some in place (kiro7.com) — If you live in Seattle, burn bans and restrictions in both the city and King County lift today as Washington's statewide ban ends after a severe wildfire season. Officials still urge caution, since fire danger remains moderate in many areas, and they recommend checking with your local fire department for any lingering or area-specific rules before lighting campfires or burning yard debris.
