Madison back-to-school Free Haircutz event pairs style with health services (nbc15.com) — Families filled Madison's Alliant Energy Center for the 18th annual Back to School Free Haircutz event, where more than 38 barbers offered free cuts to local kids. Alongside fresh styles, families could access on-site immunizations, school resources, and a bookmobile, helping students head into the new year feeling prepared and supported.
   

2. Darrion Dupree meets the challenge; takeaways from Wisconsin's scrimmage (jsonline.com) — Wisconsin Badgers football wrapped up their final open practice in Madison with a physical scrimmage north of Camp Randall, where tackling was limited but contact was intense. Coaches highlighted running back Darrion Dupree's versatility, steady quarterback play with fewer turnovers, and strong defensive moments, giving Madison fans an early glimpse of how the depth chart is shaping up before game week.
   

3. Madison teen heads to Miss America's Teen competition (nbc15.com) — A Madison high school junior, Meredith Rosemurgy, is heading to West Palm Beach next week to represent Wisconsin in the Miss America's Teen competition. After winning titles as Teen Madison and Miss Wisconsin Teen 2026, she's balancing pageant prep with running her nonprofit, The Ballet Bridge, which funds scholarships for young dancers.

Ancient canoes recovered from Lake Mendota date back more than 5,000 years (nbc15.com) — Archaeologists and First Nations partners have recovered sixteen ancient dugout canoes from Lake Mendota, with the oldest dating back more than 5,000 years. While preservation work continues, one canoe is slated for display at the future Wisconsin History Center in Madison, connecting local residents to thousands of years of Indigenous history in the region.
   

5. Smith: Modern bowhunters owe debt of gratitude to Roy Case and WBH (jsonline.com) — Modern Wisconsin bowhunters owe much of their long seasons and broad access to a small group led by Racine archer Roy Case, who helped found the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association in 1941. That group formally organized at the Lorraine Hotel in Madison and chose a Madison resident as its first president, cementing the city's role in shaping statewide bowhunting opportunities hunters enjoy today.
