📰 News we're reading

1. 'It's just been a nightmare': Hills at Hoover residents frustrated by ongoing maintenance issues (wvtm13.com) — Residents at the Hills at Hoover apartments say they've endured water outages, weak water pressure, failing air conditioning, and possible mold, with some families feeling health and daily-life impacts. The complex's new management company, Carbon Residential, blames past neglect but says it has cut a large backlog of work orders, halted new leasing, and earmarked $2.3 million for repairs over the next six months.

2. Hoover neighbors ask city to act on vacant, deteriorating home (wbrc.com) — Neighbors on Mountain Oaks Lane in Hoover are pressing the city to deal with a long-vacant house they say is crumbling, overgrown, and attracting wildlife and vandals. After a falling tree damaged a neighbor's property and safety worries grew, residents brought their concerns to the Hoover City Council and launched a petition; city officials say they're assessing the home for possible action.

3. 22 weekend events: Sloss City, Fall Plant Sale + more Sept. 17–20 (bhamnow.com) — Hoover residents can lace up Saturday for the Head Over Teal 5K and 10K at The Preserve, supporting gynecologic cancer research and patient programs. It's one of more than 20 Birmingham-area happenings this Sept. 17–20 weekend, from concerts and festivals to plant sales and Oktoberfest celebrations, offering plenty of options for families and night owls alike.

4. Doug Jones 'troubled' by connection between Flock cameras, Alabama Power (al.com) — Hoover is one of about 80 Alabama cities using Flock license plate readers through agreements managed by Alabama Power, drawing new scrutiny in the governor's race. Candidate Doug Jones questions whether the utility profits from and accesses camera data, while Alabama Power insists cities control the information and both major candidates acknowledge privacy concerns.

5. Week 5 Predictions: Final chance to make statements before n... (shelbycountyreporter.com) — Hoover football fans get a key rivalry matchup this week as the Bucs, currently 2-2, face Oak Mountain in a game local writers still favor Hoover to win. The broader Week 5 preview also breaks down Spain Park, Thompson, Pelham, and other Shelby County teams as they chase playoff positioning before a bye-heavy Week 6.
