'It really does make a difference': Montgomery is giving thousands of dollars to companies tackling a certain type of housing development (wsfa.com) — Montgomery is offering developers up to $15,000 per project to build or renovate "infill" housing on vacant or underused lots, especially in the city's northern and western districts. If you work with a licensed contractor, developer, or nonprofit and can show site control, financing, and a clear timeline, you can apply now through the city's procurement portal.
   

2. Heart of Alabama Food Bank gets helping hand from Publix volunteers (waka.com) — Publix employees from Montgomery and nearby towns recently spent a day volunteering at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, packing food boxes, senior supplements, and disaster relief supplies. The nonprofit, based in Montgomery and serving 35 counties, is using Hunger Action Month to urge residents to "play your part" by hosting food drives, volunteering, or donating.
   

3. ALEA investigating in-custody death at Montgomery jail (wsfa.com) — Montgomery police and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are investigating the death of 63-year-old Roosevelt Sankey II after a medical emergency at the Montgomery Municipal Jail. Sankey, jailed on misdemeanor charges the previous evening, was taken to the infirmary Monday morning but died despite life-saving efforts. Both internal and external investigations are underway.
   

4. Alabama Concludes Play at the ITA All-American Championships (rolltide.com) — Montgomery will host the University of Alabama men's tennis team at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic from Oct. 2–4, bringing high-level college play to local courts. The Crimson Tide just wrapped up a tough ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, gaining experience they hope to build on when they arrive in the capital city next week.

Fourteen Health Care Organizations Seeking or Exiting Bankruptcy in 2026 Include a Los Angeles Safety-Net Hospital (medicaldaily.com) — Jackson Hospital in Montgomery has successfully exited bankruptcy after signing a four-year agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, a key step toward stabilizing local care access. The broader report explains how 14 hospitals and health companies nationwide are using Chapter 11 or Chapter 9 to keep operating while restructuring debt, and what patients should do if their hospital files.
