2. Montgomery man sentenced to 25 years for string of armed robberies (wsfa.com) — A 21-year-old Montgomery man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for a series of armed robberies at local gas stations, a cell phone store, a fast-food restaurant, and an auto parts store. Federal prosecutors say the string of 2025 crimes endangered Montgomery workers and customers, and a co-defendant tied to several robberies will be sentenced in September.
3. Marine stationed at MCAS Cherry Point dies in Montgomery, Alabama crash (wcti12.com) — A U.S. Marine stationed at MCAS Cherry Point, Lance Cpl. Landon T. Dunn, was killed in a vehicle crash in Montgomery on Saturday, Aug. 22. Officials say the legal services specialist's death has deeply affected the Cherry Point community, and more details about the Montgomery crash will be released as they become available.
4. Federal, bipartisan legislation promotes earlier screening of colorectal cancer (wsfa.com) — Montgomery Cancer Center leaders say a new bipartisan U.S. Senate bill could boost early colorectal cancer screening for younger Alabamians, as cases rise among people 20 to 49. Speaking from Montgomery, oncology vice president Susan Reed stresses that earlier detection saves lives and urges residents to start screening by age 45 or earlier if they have risk factors.
5. 'Phones ringing off the hook': Dolly Parton's Imagination Library sees increased interest in River Region (wsfa.com) — Families across the River Region, including Montgomery County, are rushing to sign up young children for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, flooding River Region United Way with new enrollments. The free program mails one book a month to kids from birth to age five and has expanded locally since 2022, with Gov. Kay Ivey backing its growth statewide. Parents say their children eagerly await each book.
