Free Events Planned At Tuscaloosa's Lakes In July

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa Water is inviting residents and visitors to celebrate National Lakes Appreciation Month throughout July with a series of free events and activities highlighting Lake Tuscaloosa, Lake Nicol and Harris Lake.

The monthlong celebration is designed to encourage the community to explore the area's lakes through paddling, fishing, hiking and other outdoor recreation.

"Our lakes are some of Tuscaloosa's greatest treasures, and National Lakes Appreciation Month is an opportunity for our community to experience everything they have to offer," Lakes Division Manager Mark Thomas said. "Whether you're fishing, paddling, hiking or simply spending time with family on the water, we hope these events encourage people to enjoy our lakes and appreciate the important role they play in our daily lives."

The celebration will begin with free boat launch access July 3-5 at Sharpes Landing, located at 13750 Sharpes Lake Road, and Rock Quarry Landing, located at 2230 New Watermelon Road.

On July 18, Tuscaloosa Water will partner with Tuscaloosa Paddleboards and Mountain High Outfitters to host the Lake Nicol Paddle Fest.

The free event is open to paddleboarders and kayakers of all experience levels and will feature both a timed 3-mile paddle race and a recreational fun float through Lake Nicol. A limited number of complimentary paddleboard rentals will be available, while spectators can watch from the Outer Cliff Trail.

Throughout July, residents can also participate in the Tuscaloosa Lakes Bingo Challenge by completing lake-themed activities at the city's three lakes.

Participants who finish their bingo card can redeem it for a Tuscaloosa Water rubber duck at the Lakes Division office, 3650 Lake Nicol Road, during normal business hours. Bingo cards are available for download online.

The annual Tuscaloosa Lakes Photo Contest will also run through noon on July 31. Participants can enter by posting an original photo taken at Lake Tuscaloosa, Lake Nicol or Harris Lake on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #TuscaloosaLakes.

The winning image will be featured on the City of Tuscaloosa's social media channels, and the photographer will receive a gift card to Southern Ale House Dockside.

Tuscaloosa Water will share updates about National Lakes Appreciation Month activities on the City of Tuscaloosa's social media channels throughout July.
