Warrior Met Coal Miner Killed In Underground Accident

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Investigators say a miner was killed Wednesday evening in a machinery accident at an underground coal mine.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Commander Capt. Jack Kennedy told local media Thursday morning the incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. July 1 at an active mine operated by Warrior Met Coal in the 22000 block of Highway 69 North near Berry.

Investigators said Justin Calloway, 24, of Cordova, was found unresponsive underground.

Kennedy said Calloway was transported to the surface but did not survive.

The Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene, as is standard protocol for unattended deaths in Tuscaloosa County.

Preliminary findings indicate Calloway died as the result of a machinery accident while working underground and investigators said there is no indication of foul play.

The VCU is working with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Medical Examiner's Office to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Federal investigators, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are also investigating the incident.

No additional information has been released.
