1 Injured After Downtown Tucson Shooting; Suspect In Custody, Police Say

A downtown Tucson confrontation ended in gunfire early Sunday, leaving one person injured and one suspect in custody.

TUCSON, AZ — A late-night confrontation in downtown Tucson turned into a shooting early Sunday, leaving one person injured and another in custody, police said.

The shooting happened around 12:50 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street. Officers were already nearby when gunfire broke out and quickly detained a suspect near the scene, police said.

The injured person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said the shooting appears to have started after a confrontation between two groups that ran into each other downtown.

Investigators said they spent the morning interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence and checking several locations before Congress Street reopened.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or said what charges may be filed. It is also not clear whether anyone else is being sought in connection with the shooting.
