Communication Sciences and Disorders Accreditation Public Meeting/Call for Public Comment (csuchico.edu) — Residents connected to Chico State's Communication Sciences and Disorders program can weigh in on its accreditation when national reviewers visit campus on October 19. A public meeting in the ARTS Building and an option to submit written comments give students, families, clinicians, and community members a direct say in how well the Chico program meets professional standards.
   

2. Livestock show moves back to Memorial Weekend for 2027 Silver Dollar Fair (actionnewsnow.com) — The Silver Dollar Fair in Chico is reuniting its Junior Livestock Show with the main fair over Memorial Weekend, May 27–31, 2027, after two years apart. Fair leaders say the move restores tradition, lets visitors enjoy livestock competitions alongside entertainment and exhibits, and gives youth exhibitors a bigger platform to showcase their animals and agricultural skills.
   

3. 59% of college students face food or housing insecurity, survey finds (krcrtv.com) — Students at Chico State are increasingly relying on the Hungry Wildcat Food Pantry, which now serves 500–700 students a day as food and housing costs rise. Staff estimate about half the student body faces food insecurity, and visits have doubled in three years, prompting plans to expand services and remote options for those who can't easily reach campus.
   

4. Butte Humane Society receives $10,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society (actionnewsnow.com) — Butte Humane Society in Chico has received a $10,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society after helping 33 pets find foster homes during a national June challenge. The funding supports the shelter's no-kill, foster-focused work, which relies on community participation and operates without city or county funding, expanding lifesaving options for local cats and dogs.
   

5. This 18-year-old thought she'd take a gap year. Instead, she joined the S.F. Symphony (sfchronicle.com) — A Chico-born cellist who once played in the local youth orchestra has just landed a coveted seat with the San Francisco Symphony at only 18. Her journey runs from early backyard performances and Chico youth ensembles to a grueling audition process, family sacrifices, and finally a full-time professional role that validates years of hard work and hometown support.
