📰 News we're reading

1. Man Arrested In Puppy Abuse Wine Country Case (patch.com) — Napa Valley readers should know that a six-month-old pit bull's injuries, flagged by an emergency veterinary clinic as suspicious, led to an animal abuse investigation. American Canyon police and Napa County Sheriff's detectives arrested the dog's owner, who was booked into the Napa County Department of Corrections on suspicion of abusing the puppy.

2. Napa County $1 billion transportation road map released (napavalleyregister.com) — Napa County transportation planners have unveiled a draft $1 billion roadmap that could reshape how you drive, bike, and ride transit locally, including major fixes on Highway 29, new roundabouts in Napa, and big gaps in funding. Residents can review the Intersections 2050 Countywide Transportation Plan, weigh in on 14 priority projects like the Vine Trail expansion, and submit comments through Oct. 9.

3. Napa pauses roundabout plans for 5-way intersection that would have claimed historic home, displaced elderly resident (pressdemocrat.com) — Napa city leaders have paused plans to convert the busy East Avenue–Coombsville Road–Third Street–Silverado Trail intersection into dual roundabouts, a project that would require demolishing 84-year-old Charlie Rossi's historic home. After strong public support for Rossi, the council delayed certifying the environmental report while staff explore alternatives and negotiate options that could preserve his housing and still address long-standing traffic delays.

4. Mystery continues to surround Napa LAFCO head's status (napavalleyregister.com) — Napa County's powerful but little-known LAFCO is operating without its executive officer, Brendon Freeman, who is on unexplained administrative leave just as major American Canyon annexation requests move forward. With questions about Brown Act transparency and no clear public explanation from county or city leaders, residents may see the issue surface at the Oct. 5 meeting or a possible special session.

5. 'A great winemaker for Napa Valley': Friends, colleagues remember influential legacy of Tom Rinaldi (pressdemocrat.com) — Napa Valley is remembering influential winemaker Tom Rinaldi, founding winemaker at Duckhorn and a key figure in elevating California Merlot, after his death at 77. Friends and colleagues recall his five decades shaping local wineries, his mentorship of younger vintners, and his colorful presence around St. Helena and the broader Napa community, where his wines and personality left a lasting mark.
