📰 News we're reading

1. Suspicious Packages Prompt Shelter-In-Place Orders In Oceanside (patch.com) — Oceanside residents near Castellano Way and Vandegrift Boulevard were told to shelter in place Sunday after multiple suspicious packages triggered a major hazardous materials and bomb squad response. Several nearby streets, including part of Vandegrift Boulevard, were closed as fire, police, and regional hazmat teams worked under unified command to secure and remove the items, with no injuries reported.

2. Fly Into the Holidays With A Magical Cirque Christmas in Oceanside (theresandiego.com) — A high-energy holiday cirque show is headed to Frontwave Arena in Oceanside for one night only on Sunday, Dec. 13, with acrobatics set to modern Christmas music. With doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and family-friendly performances visible from every seat, it's an easy outing for North County residents looking for a festive December tradition close to home.

3. San Clemente Train Line Reopens After Storm Damage (voiceofoc.org) — Rail service between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside has fully reopened after high surf from Hurricane Marie damaged tracks over Labor Day weekend, restoring both Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink routes. Oceanside riders no longer need bus bridges to reach Irvine, though nearby coastal cities are still grappling with emergency declarations and property damage. Expect more coastal preparation as a strong El Niño winter looms.

4. Del Mar readies for flooding, erosion as El Niño builds (northcoastcurrent.com) — Emergency planners are gearing up for a potentially very strong El Niño, and Oceanside is one of several sites where regional swift-water rescue teams can be pre-positioned to protect Del Mar during major storms. Del Mar is clearing drains, staging sandbags and coordinating with regional agencies as forecasts call for a wetter-than-normal winter. Residents across North County are urged to prepare homes and stay alert for flood warnings.

5. Oceanside man spots whale shark off Malibu coast (cbs8.com) — An Oceanside-based fish-spotting pilot helped document a rare whale shark swimming off Malibu, part of an unusual wave of warm-water sea creatures reaching Southern California. Local researchers say El Niño is bringing in species like Chilean devil rays and more sharks, but they emphasize that beachgoers in Oceanside and beyond still face very low risk in the water.
