Man Leaves OC Jail, Suspected Of Killing Another The Next Day: Sheriff

STANTON, CA — An Orange County man freshly released from jail was re-arrested Friday on suspicion of killing a man in Stanton.

Charles Mathew Swanson, 22, was booked on suspicion of killing 45-year-old transient Joshua Lee Long Thursday night, according to Orange County sheriff's deputies.

Around 6:15 p.m., several 911 callers told dispatchers that a knife-wielding man was chasing another man near Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue, deputies said.

Long, an unhoused person who lived in the area, was found on scene with serious injuries and rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses provided investigators with a license plate number and a description of the suspect, which led deputies to Swanson using a license plate reader.

The suspect then led deputies in a vehicle pursuit that ended when the suspect crashed into another car.

"Investigators do not know what connection, if any, the suspect and victim have. There is also no known motive for the attack," according to the report.

Swanson was booked into Orange County Jail on Sept. 9 and released Sept. 19, according to jail records. He was booked again into jail on Wednesday and released Thursday, according to jail records.
