📰 News we're reading

1. Palm Springs International Airport installs 80 EV chargers in parking lot — Southern California's third-largest array (thecooldown.com) — If you drive an EV to Palm Springs International Airport, you'll soon have access to 80 new chargers in Parking Lot B, making it Southern California's third-largest airport charging array. Standard airport parking rates still apply, with charging paid through the ChargePoint app, and staff will adjust how many spaces are EV-only based on daily demand.

2. The Roggin Report, Aug 20th, 2026 (nbcpalmsprings.com) — Palm Springs City Council chose to keep a District 2 election on the ballot, even with only one qualified candidate, rather than save about $22,000 by canceling it. The Roggin Report also looks at a lawsuit over Desert Regional funding, repeated 911 outages prompting a dedicated data line, Indio's immigration-enforcement briefing, the Desert Symphony's canceled season, and a new email scam warning.

3. The Friday Five: The 5 most important things from desert football Week 1 (desertsun.com) — Palm Springs High opened its football season with a rough 37-6 loss at Hemet, while several other Coachella Valley teams notched impressive Week 1 wins. From Indio's explosive offense to Desert Mirage's stingy defense, the roundup highlights which local programs look ready to contend and which have early-season questions heading into Week 2.

4. Strength Of El Nino Not Definite But Signs Point to Intense Storm Season In IE (patch.com subscription) — Meteorologists say this year's strengthening El Niño could bring an intense storm season to the Inland Empire, with past data showing Palm Springs can swing from very dry to much wetter winters. While nothing is guaranteed, stronger Pacific storms could mean more rain, flooding and road closures for the Coachella Valley, so residents should watch forecasts closely heading into fall and winter.

5. Federal plan reduces California's Colorado River water. See how much (mercedsunstar.com) — California will see significant Colorado River water cuts starting in 2027, part of a new federal plan that also reduces allocations for Arizona and Nevada to protect Lake Mead and Lake Powell. While the details focus on statewide and regional impacts, the Palm Springs-based Desert Sun notes these reductions could eventually influence how much water reaches Southern California communities that rely on the river.
