The piece should reflect civil rights themes and the library's community role, with the selected artist collaborating with local residents and stakeholders to shape a welcoming, meaningful design for the 24th Street Bypass location.

2. Murder conviction for shooting death in Sacramento home burglary and arson fire (sacbee.com) — A Sacramento County jury has convicted 44-year-old Michael Ryan Wheat of first-degree murder, burglary, arson, and gun possession in the 2023 killing of Michael Dean Plog at his south Sacramento-area home. Firefighters initially found Plog in a burning Del Norte Boulevard house, but investigators later determined he died from a gunshot wound before the blaze. Wheat and accomplice Dominic Perez are set for sentencing in Sacramento Superior Court on November 6.

Sacramento school district revises budget to tackle $158 million deficit (kcra.com) — Sacramento City Unified has approved major budget revisions and cuts to close a $158 million deficit and avoid running out of money next year, potentially preventing a state takeover or loan. The district now projects a positive balance if all changes stick, and must submit its plan to the Sacramento County Office of Education by September 30 for review.

4. The Aerospace Museum of California has over 35 airplanes. Here's how they get cleaned (sacbee.com) — Just north of Sacramento, volunteers are helping keep the Aerospace Museum of California's more than 35 outdoor aircraft sparkling for visitors. SAFE Credit Union employees recently washed 16 planes in a single day, using giant wash totes, fire hoses, and long-handled brushes. Organizers say the effort both preserves aviation history and improves the experience for local families who visit the airpark.

Proposed 'kill floor' in Sacramento County moves forward despite public pushback (fox40.com) — A controversial small-scale slaughter facility in rural Sacramento County is moving forward after the county Planning Commission rejected an appeal from Rio Linda-Elverta residents. Neighbors worry about water safety, odors, traffic, and property values, while the applicant cites demand for halal services and promises sealed, inspected operations. With the appeal denied, licensing can proceed without more public hearings for now.
