📰 News we're reading

1. San Francisco's Chinatown puts modern spin on 3,000-year-old tradition (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco residents can still catch the Chinatown Autumn Moon Festival today on Grant Avenue, with parades, lion dancing, and a K-pop contest continuing the neighborhood's 36-year tradition. The free event, created to support local businesses after the Loma Prieta earthquake, now draws hundreds for food, music, martial arts, and family-friendly cultural activities.

2. New Security Measures Make Entering San Francisco General Hospital Challenging (potreroview.net) — New security rules at Zuckerberg San Francisco General now force all visitors through a single 22nd Street entrance with metal detectors, making access tougher for some San Francisco patients with mobility issues. The changes follow a fatal 2025 stabbing, Cal/OSHA violations, and ongoing disputes between unions and city and UCSF leaders over whether safety concerns are truly being addressed.

3. Multivehicle collision near Presidio injures six, SFFD says (sfchronicle.com) — Six people were injured Saturday evening in a multivehicle collision at Park Presidio Boulevard and California Street in San Francisco's Inner Richmond, just outside the Presidio. Emergency crews asked residents to avoid the area due to fire activity and lingering traffic delays, though officials said all injuries were non-life-threatening and victims were transported to local hospitals.

4. San Francisco's AI growth shadows layoffs and tech workers struggles (arkansasonline.com) — San Francisco residents working in tech are feeling a sharp divide between soaring AI wealth and widespread layoffs, with thousands of local jobs lost since 2020 even as IPO riches loom. Laid-off engineers are joining support hikes, retraining for AI-focused roles, or considering leaving the city as rising AI-driven rents and shifting job requirements reshape daily life and career prospects.

5. 'King of the Streets': Hundreds of lowriders cruise through S.F.'s Mission District (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco's Mission District streets filled with hundreds of vintage lowriders Saturday for the second annual "King of the Streets" celebration, drawing thousands of spectators along Mission from Cesar Chavez to 17th. Organized by the San Francisco Lowrider Council, the event honored lowrider culture with a parade, car show, art exhibit, and a hopping contest offering $10,000 to the top car.
