Lockdown Ordered After Man Dies At Correctional Institution

The facility was placed on lockdown after the man was found unresponsive during a regular tour, officials said.

SOMERS, CT — The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the death of an incarcerated individual at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers.

According to the agency, a correction officer conducting a regular tour at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 22, found an incarcerated man unresponsive in his cell.

Staff immediately began emergency lifesaving measures. Paramedics from a local ambulance company also responded and continued efforts to revive the man while transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:31 p.m., officials said.

The deceased was identified as Craig Whyte, 45, of New Haven. The Department of Correction said he was serving a 33-month sentence for threatening.

Connecticut State Police arrived at the facility at about 4 p.m. Sunday to begin an investigation, according to the department.

Officials said Osborn Correctional Institution was placed on lockdown status following the death.

The Department of Correction Security Division and Connecticut State Police are investigating. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
