Shots Fired Investigation In Norwalk Leads To 2 Arrests: Police

NORWALK, CT — Two men were arrested in connection with a shots fired incident reported Thursday afternoon in Norwalk, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Ramon Tejada said the department received a report around 4:30 p.m. of a shots fired complaint in the area of Girard and Silk streets.

According to Tejada, the complainant reported hearing multiple gunshots and also found a shell casing on the roadway of Silk Street.

A description of possible persons of interest was then sent out to responding officers, Tejada said.

When officers arrived in the area and approached a person later identified as Melvin Garcia, 18, of Norwalk, he fled on foot, according to Tejada.

According to Tejada, Garcia discarded a firearm beneath a van parked on Silk Street during the foot pursuit.

Garcia was arrested and officers recovered a 9mm Glock with a large-capacity magazine, Tejada said.

When detectives arrived in the area, they processed the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, canvassed the area for surveillance footage and found two spent 9mm shell casings, Tejada said.

According to Tejada, further investigation revealed Jose Morales, 34, of Norwalk, discharged a firearm at a person during an altercation on Silk Street.

Morales was arrested at his home, and detectives subsequently obtained search warrants for his home and vehicles, Tejada said.

Detectives recovered a 9mm Taurus handgun from a pickup truck belonging to Morales during the execution of the search warrants, according to Tejada.

Morales was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment and criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault.

Garcia was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a large capacity magazine and interfering with an officer.

Both Morales' and Garcia's bonds were set at $250,000 and they are scheduled to appear in court later this month, according to Tejada.
