📰 News we're reading

1. Two Bay County restaurant closed, 6 get high priority violations (newsherald.com) — Several Panama City restaurants, including locations on East 6th Street, MLK Boulevard, State 77, and 23rd Street, recently received health inspections, with two Bay County eateries temporarily closed until violations were fixed. Others in Panama City and Panama City Beach must complete follow-up inspections, and residents are encouraged to report suspected health violations to state regulators.

2. Panama City man encounters bear near trash cans (mypanhandle.com) — A Panama City resident recently found a large bear rummaging through his trash, after earlier Ring camera footage showed a smaller bear visiting his cans in broad daylight. Neighbors report other bear sightings, and he's now urging locals to secure garbage and stay calm, loud, and never run if they encounter one.

3. Panama City CRA offers grant to help restore the historic Grammar School (mypanhandle.com) — Panama City's CRA has approved a $100,000 grant and agreed to waive roughly $375,000 in code fines if a new developer brings the historic Panama City Grammar School up to code within a year. The century‑old, Hurricane Michael–damaged building would be converted into housing, but the incentives vanish if key repairs like the roof, windows, and doors aren't finished on time.

4. Panama City CRA board votes to defund 25 Flock cameras (mypanhandle.com) — Panama City officials are preparing to remove 41 license plate readers from state rights‑of‑way and, after a CRA vote, will no longer fund 25 Flock cameras in redevelopment areas. With 93 cameras total and some tied to school‑zone speed systems, city leaders will revisit how many to keep and how to handle contracts at next week's commission meeting.

5. Panama City shark attack victim receives incredible $159K news (latination.com) — Panama City residents have rallied behind a Naval Surface Warfare Center worker badly injured in a shark attack near facilities on Saint Andrew Bay, raising over $159,000 on GoFundMe. As donations push toward a $200,000 goal, marine experts say feeding bull sharks likely followed sea turtles into the area, offering a sobering reminder about local waters while the family focuses on recovery.
