A local architectural firm will now prepare bid documents and detailed plans to fix damaged marble, replace sealant, and install new roofing on the tower and both wings, shaping a significant upgrade to a key city facility.

Augusta veterans cemetery lands $13.6M grant, project moves ahead (house.gov) — Plans for Georgia's largest veterans cemetery in Augusta are moving forward after a $13.6 million federal grant was awarded for the Byrd Road site near Gracewood. The first 50-acre phase will accommodate about 4,100 burials, and a local nonprofit is raising private donations for features like a bell tower and enhanced landscaping to honor area veterans.
   

3. Fleming Park update meeting will outline next project steps (augustachronicle.com) — Augusta residents can get a detailed update on the Fleming Park Improvement Project at a community meeting Sept. 23, 6 p.m., at Bernie Ward Community Center on Lumpkin Road. Recreation and Parks staff will walk through the near-final design, explain planned upgrades, and outline next steps, giving neighbors and park users a chance to ask questions and share feedback.
   

4. Zoning gap lets smoke shop open near elementary school (wrdw.com) — A new smoke shop just a short walk from Glenn Hills Elementary is highlighting a 60-year-old gap in Augusta's zoning rules that doesn't restrict tobacco or vape stores near schools. Local education leaders are raising concerns as commissioners consider a zoning overhaul that would ban new smoke and vape shops within 1,200 feet of schools, though existing shops could stay.
   

5. From panhandling to restraint chair: What led to an Augusta arrest (theaugustapress.com) — An Augusta woman's panhandling complaint outside an East Boundary Street gas station escalated into a criminal trespass arrest and her placement in a restraint chair at Charles B. Webster Detention Center. The story walks through deputies' reports, her prior charges, and how Georgia jails are supposed to use restraint chairs, offering local context on law-enforcement and detention policies.
