📰 News we're reading

• Tense argument breaks out during discussion about holding parents liable for kids' crimes (wsbtv.com) — Covington leaders just rejected, for now, a proposal that would fine or even jail parents if their children repeatedly damage others’ property, after a heated City Council debate that forced the mayor to restore order several times. The ordinance failed 4–2 but will come up again at the June 1 meeting, where residents can weigh in on how the city should address youth crime and responsibility.

• Plan to cancel property taxes for some metro Atlanta homeowners moves forward (wsbtv.com) — Covington homeowners could see their city property tax bills disappear if voters approve a new referendum this November, following Gov. Brian Kemp’s approval of House Bill 1503. The plan would replace city property tax revenue with money from nearby data centers, though Newton County property taxes would still apply and changes wouldn’t take effect until January 1, 2027.

• Interim Chair Linda Hays reimburses the county after taxpayers footed the bill for surprise dinner (covnews.com) — Newton County Interim Chair Linda Hays has reimbursed the county $4,200 after a taxpayer-funded surprise dinner was held in her honor, a story first detailed through documents obtained by The Covington News. The March 26 event at Joachim Herz House celebrated her 50 years of service, and questions remain about who was invited and how the plans were approved, prompting an open records request.
