Repeat Window Peeper Gets Extended-Term Sentence: Prosecutors

MARENGO, IL — A Marengo man was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge stemming from an incident in which he was accused of peering into the window of a Marengo apartment.

Dustin D. Hanabarger was sentenced on Wednesday after pleading guilty to felony disorderly conduct, according to a news release from the McHenry County State's Attorney Office. The charge stemmed from a May 31, 2025, incident in which Hanabarger knowingly peered into the window of a Marengo apartment, prosecutors said.

The conviction was Hanabarger's fourth for similar window-peeping conduct, according to prosecutors. His most recent prior conviction resulted in a three-year prison sentence, which was handed down in August 2023.

Because of Hanabarger's prior criminal history, he was eligible for extended-term sentencing, allowing prosecutors to seek a sentence exceeding the normal maximum of three years for a Class 4 felony.

“This was not an isolated lapse in judgment,” Freese said. “This defendant has repeatedly engaged in conduct that invades the privacy and sense of security people have every right to expect inside their own homes.”

Freese said prior convictions and a previous prison sentence had not deterred Hanabarger.

“This five-year sentence recognizes the seriousness of that repeated behavior and sends a clear message that continued criminal conduct will result in increasingly serious consequences,” she said.
