Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For McHenry, Kane Counties

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for McHenry and Kane counties Tuesday morning, with storms capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts and considerable tree damage.

Severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Belvidere to Malta and Shabbona and were moving east at about 55 mph at about 9:50 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The line of storms has a history of producing wind damage, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning remains in effect until 10:45 a.m.

Communities in the warning area include Marengo, Hampshire, Huntley, Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Pingree Grove, Gilberts, Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Aurora, Sugar Grove and other areas in McHenry and Kane counties.

The National Weather Service said wind gusts up to 70 mph could cause considerable tree damage and damage to mobile homes, roofs and outbuildings. Hail smaller than three-quarters of an inch was also possible.

A tornado is possible, according to the warning. Residents should remain alert for rapidly developing tornadoes and seek shelter immediately if one is spotted, weather officials said.

Residents should take shelter inside a sturdy building, away from windows. Those in homes with basements should move to the basement or a small, interior room on the lowest floor, according to the warning.
