Leaders say just a few hours a month—sharing ice cream, playing games, or talking—can improve kids' mental health, grades, and sense of support while keeping them out of the justice system.
   

2. Parents push for changes at Upper Highlands intersection (wave3.com) — Parents in Louisville's Upper Highlands are pressing city officials to improve safety at the busy Eleanor and Lancashire intersection near St. Raphael and Assumption, where they say near-misses happen daily. After a petition and years of waiting, they're still seeking basic fixes like crosswalks, signs, and flashing lights, while their council member cites staffing delays in Louisville Metro Public Works.
   

3. LMPD welcomes newest drug trafficking dog, launches K-9 retirement fund (wave3.com) — Louisville Metro Police just added Ringo, a new drug-detecting K-9, and launched a retirement fund to help cover medical costs for police dogs after they leave service. Charges upgraded for woman accused of fatally shooting DeSales graduate (wlky.com) — A Louisville-connected community is mourning after charges were upgraded to second-degree manslaughter for the woman accused of shooting 18-year-old DeSales High School graduate Brandon Williams Jr. in Lexington. Williams, a 2025 DeSales alum and three-sport athlete, died two days after the September 8 shooting, and police say witness accounts conflict with the suspect's claim it was accidental.
   

5. Louisville mother's tribute to late son goes viral at Louder Than Life (wave3.com) — At Louisville's Louder Than Life festival, local mother Kimberly King honored her late son Justin by releasing some of his ashes during a My Chemical Romance song, a moment that quickly went viral. The tribute continues a yearly tradition of remembering him at the Louisville event and has connected her with others navigating grief through music and shared experiences.
