Shrewsbury Expands Library Access With Outreach Services

SHREWSBURY, MA — For residents who can’t make it to the library due to injury, mobility challenges or recovery from surgery, the Shrewsbury Public Library is making sure access to books and media still comes right to their door.

Through its Outreach Service, the library delivers materials including books, magazines, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and movies to residents across town. Deliveries and pick-ups are made on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, allowing homebound patrons and those temporarily unable to travel to stay connected to library resources at no cost.

At the center of the program is Outreach and Marketing Librarian Diana Karas, who helps coordinate the service and drives the library’s Outreach Van throughout Shrewsbury.

While her role includes promoting programs and connecting residents with library services, Karas says the outreach work is among the most meaningful parts of her job, ensuring that access to information and entertainment isn’t limited by a person’s ability to leave home.

The service is open to both long-term homebound residents and those recovering from short-term medical situations, expanding the library’s reach well beyond its physical building.

On National Library Outreach Day, part of National Library Week, library staff highlighted the program as an example of how public libraries continue to adapt services to meet community needs.
